Jamaicans for Justice (JFJ) is a non-profit, non-partisan human rights and social justice organization. JFJ provides legal support to victims to secure justice and conducts research and advocacy. JFJ works heavily on policing, childrens rights, state accountability, and access to justice especially for marginalized people. JFJs employs attorneys with strong commitment to human rights and public law to execute varied legal activities.
The legal officer will be an attorney who participates in all aspects of JFJs work where intersections with law and policy exist. They will support all the legal activities of JFJ in accordance with the strategic goals of the organization including legal services to victims of human rights violations, public interest litigation, legal education and legislative and policy advocacy.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
Delivering legal services to protect and promote human rights, equality, accountability and access to justice.
Performing specific legal functions including:
Legally assessing complaints/reports from persons
Conducting legal assessments/investigations necessary to case management
Conducting necessary legal research and writing
Preparing legal documents and other material pertinent legal proceedings
Providing legal advice to persons
Representing JFJ and its clients in legal matters in courts across Jamaica, other legal settings, before public authorities, or in other forums.
Participating in public interest litigation
Maintaining correspondence on behalf of JFJ or its clients in respect of legal matters
Preparing reports pertinent to effective case management and internal governance
Executing legislative and policy initiatives to advance human rights, good governance, accountability and access to justice. Specific functions include but are not limited to:
Conducting legislative and policy analysis
Preparing opinions, submissions or reports on legislation, policies and practices to impact decision-making processes
Conducting advocacy to impact legislative and policy outcomes
Providing legal advice and opinions
Providing appropriate training on legal and policy matters when required
Participating in organizational activities, meetings, and planning exercises as required.
