Change a life - become a mentor![]()
Nadine Haughton
Career Writer "A person wrapped up in himself makes a very small package" - Denzel Washington A few weeks ago, I came across this quote and had a hard time getting it out of my mind. It led me to the consideration of issues related to teamwork, family life, and everyday relationships and for some strange reason, mentorship. While I have always been ready to share my knowledge and experiences, mentorship is one area I have never considered. I have encouraged it in others, convinced that they had something to impart to persons with similar interests. Then, I read that quote. Mentorship Simply put, mentorship refers to a relationship in which a more experienced person (mentor) forms a developmental relationship with a less experienced protégé. The counsel provided does not have to relate specifically to a career or job function, but must contribute to the growth of the protégé in some way. So, with our ongoing focus on self-development and building ourselves and brands, we have been reading, networking, getting more qualified and I am now asking you to throw the curve ball of mentorship in the loop. Yes, I ask you to consider the following: The numbers of high school graduates that have never been exposed to résumé-writing classes and all the knowledge you have gained from upgrading your own résumé. Your knowledge of the specific subject areas required to enter into your particular field and how this could guide youngsters with their choices. The number of children who would love to be exposed not only to books, but also to discussions about their interpretations of the information, and the tons of ideas that flow through their minds daily. The ongoing reports of young persons who find themselves creating babies they are unable to nurture in any way. Could the intervention of a mentor have led to different choices? The satisfaction to be gained from impacting positively on another life. Traits of a good mentor
While I understand that certain areas of mentorship require special training and certification, there is no doubt that many of us would be able to make a difference in the lives of others if we were able to hone our time management skills to create spaces for accommodating others.
