Midwifery training opportunityFollowing the recent publication by the Sunday Gleaner of information indicating that many vacancies exist in the Ministry of Health & Environment’s (MOH) training programme in midwifery, there has been heightened interest in the course. The MOH provides full sponsorship for the Direct Entry Midwifery Training Programme. Persons are trained mainly for employment in Primary Health Care and are also employed as District Midwives. Training is run by the Kingston School of Nursing at three locations: - Victoria Jubilee School of Midwifery, in Kingston - Cornwall School of Nursing, Montego Bay - Spanish Town Midwifery School, Spanish Town, St. Catherine The period of training is for two years. Requirements for entry include three compulsory subjects as follows: 1. English Language - CXC General Proficiency Grades I, II or III - GCE O' Level A, B, or C 2. Mathematics CXC General Proficiency Grades I, II or III - GCE O' Level A, B, or C or Physics - CXC General Proficiency or Grades I, II or II Statistics - GCE O' Level A, B, or C 3. Science Biology - CXC General Proficiency Human & Social Biology Grades I, II or III Integrated Science GCE O' Level A, B, or C 4. Two other subjects from the following list at CXC General Proficiency or GCE O' Level A,B, C:- English Literature Social Studies Food & Nutrition Geography Home Economics Management Principles of Business Chemistry Principles of Accounts /Accounts and Business Studies Religious Education/religious Studies/Bible Knowledge History /Caribbean History Foreign language- Spanish or French Agriculture Science (Double/single) Information Technology (general/technical) In total, a minimum of five (5) is required. ) The minimum age of entry is 18 years.
