Maximizing Profits through Intellectual Property Protection on April 26, 2009 (10AM - 3PM) at the

The conference aims to provide a forum for the discussion of practical ways in which Jamaican

businesses can boost their profitability through a more judicious use and proactive protection of their

intellectual property.

The symposium will feature opening remarks from Hon. Karl Samuda, Minister of Industry, Investment

and Commerce along with three Keynote presentations, two Panel Discussions and a Plenary Lunch

presentation.

Confirmed speakers include: Ms. Kayanne Taylor, Director, Office of Intellectual Property, UTECH ;

Ms. Carol Simpson, Executive Director, Jamaica Intellectual Property Office; Mr. Vitus Evans, CEO,

Jamaica Agricultural Development Foundation; Dr. Sonjah Niaah, Lecturer, University of the West

Indies; Ms. Charmaine Patterson, Attorney-At-Law; Ms. Carol A. Newman, General Manager ,

Jamaican Copyright Licensing Agency; Mrs. Shirley Carby, Managing Director, Carlong Publishers; Mr.

Rudolph Muir, Attorney-At-Law (Member; Usain Bolt's Management Team), Mr. Clyde McKenzie,

Shocking Vibes Production; Mr. Christopher Gentles, Director General, The Coffee Industry Board;

Mr. Chris Collman, CEO, JamGuy Food Processors Limited and Mr. Howard McIntosh, Chairman,

Reggae Industry Association of Jamaica.

In addition to the discussions four initiatives will be launched one of which is called Positive Jamaica; a

range of news and educational features. The public education initiative aims to provide a forum for the

discussion of the positive aspects of Jamaica's history, culture and people in a range of formats from

radio to news stories.

PositiveJamaica is expected to have a positive impact on the country's economic growth and

development as Jamaica's economic development is in a real way, dependent on the success of its

creative industries and in turn, the success of our creative industries such as our sports, food, dance,

music, film and art is dependent on the protection and enhancement of BRAND Jamaica.

A very important aspect of BRAND JAMAICA is the country's positive and fun "vibes", yet daily, this

aspect of the brand is being affected by unduly negative news. There is no doubt that there are negative

stories about every country on earth and it is never the intention to hide our warts however we are

certain that Jamaica has far more positive stories than is being reported.

PositiveJamaica aims to help to protect BRAND JAMAICA through the dissemination of the myriad

positive news on various aspects of the country's social, economic and political fiber. The programme

will take a multi-faceted approach to this in the form of a radio show, daily press releases and the

Positive Jamaica Road Show.
