The Cabinet is today expected to discuss and sign off on a recommendation for Air Jamaica to be sold to the company that owns Spirit Airlines.

Gleaner sources have reported that the Air Jamaica Privatisation Committee has recommended that the national airline be sold to Indigo Partners and Oaktree Capital.

The other bidder was the Trinidadian-owned Caribbean Airlines.

Don Wehby, the minister without portfolio in the finance ministry has received the recommendation and is expected to table it at today’s cabinet meeting.

The Information Minister Daryl Vaz would not confirm the report of the prospective buyer but he says the matter is an agenda item for the Cabinet today.

In the meantime, the unions representing Air Jamaica workers will be seeking clarification from the Government on the impending sale of the airline.

It’s also being reported that there is a proposal to change the name of the cash strapped national airline from Air Jamaica to Spirit of Jamaica.

However, Granville Valentine, the vice president of the National Workers Union (NWU), says the union was not invited to be part of the finalising of any deal.

He’s adamant that the union must become a partner in any further decision-making.

Mr. Valentine is seeking to make it clear that the NWU is not opposed to the divestment of Air Jamaica.
