Five to receive UWI honorary degrees this weekend
Hotelier, John Issa and Veteran Journalist, John Maxwell are among five persons who are to receive honorary degrees at the graduation ceremony at the University of the West Indies Mona this weekend.
The other recipients are The Gleaner Company’s Managing Director, Oliver Clarke, Historian, Professor Colin A. Palmer and Publisher, Dr Anne Walmsley.
The graduation ceremonies are being held in 3 sessions.
The first is scheduled for this afternoon at 5:30, while the others are to be held tomorrow morning at 10:00, and at 5:30 in the afternoon.
Oliver Clarke, who is credited with transforming one of the oldest newspapers in the region into a very successful media enterprise, will be conferred with a Doctor of Laws degree at this afternoon’s ceremony.
Professor Palmer will be conferred with a Doctor of Letters degree at that ceremony.
He has produced over 60 publications with several papers still to be published.
Professor Palmer’s range of scholarly interests includes areas such as history and black culture.
John Maxwell who is also an Environmental activist will receive the Doctor of Letters degree during the ceremony tomorrow morning.
Mr. Maxwell has been involved in media since the 1950s, and has also lectured at the Caribbean Institute of Media and Communications and at the University of Technology.
Dr Walmsley will receive the honorary Doctor of Letters degree for her achievements as a publisher and cultural historian.
She is the first Caribbean publisher for Longmans and was instrumental in having several Caribbean classics republished.
At the final ceremony tomorrow afternoon, Hotelier, John Issa will receive a Doctor of Laws degree.
He is one of the most influential figures in the country’s Tourism industry and has been credited with introducing the concept of all-inclusive hotels in Jamaica.
