There was uproar in the parliament this afternoon over a report by the Electoral Commission of Jamaica (ECJ) on changes to some constituency boundaries.

In its report, the ECJ recommended the establishment of three new constituencies – one in Portmore, one in Spanish Town and the other in Montego Bay.

With another three constituencies the number of seats in Gordon House will be increased from 60 to 63, removing the possibility of a tie in an election.

To create the new constituency in Spanish Town, 31 polling divisions were removed from South West St Catherine, the seat won by the Jamaica Labour Party's Everald Warmington in the general elections of 2007.

Another 31 divisions were cut from Central St Catherine, the constituency of Olivia 'Babsy' Grange while St Catherine West Central, the seat of the JLP’s Dr Ken Baugh has been reduced by eight.

The St Catherine South Central constituency held by the People's National Party's, Sharon Hay-Webster has given up 16 polling divisions for the creation of the new constituency in Spanish Town and 36 for the setting up of the new one in Portmore.

However, Mr Warmington took issue with the changes recommended by the ECJ.

Leader of Government Business, Andrew Holness said that given the sensitive nature of adjustments to the constituencies, it would not be appropriate to discuss the report in parliament.

But, the South West St Catherine MP Everald Warmington was insistent.

However, despite his insistence, the members of the House accepted the ECJ’s report.
