US Congress honours Rex

The US Congress has honoured the late Vice Chancellor Emeritus of the University of the West Indies Professor Rex Nettleford for his outstanding contribution to Jamaica, the Caribbean and the United States.

Professor Nettleford died at the George Washington Hospital in the United States on February 2, six days after collapsing in a hotel.

He was 76.

A congressional proclamation issued by US Congresswoman, Yvette Clarke, was presented to UWI Chancellor, Sir George Alleyne, at a memorial service held at Howard University campus in Washington yesterday.

The two-hour long memorial service was organised by the Jamaican Embassy in association with the UWI Alumni Association of Washington DC.

Tributes were made by the UWI’s Chancellor, Prime Minister Bruce Golding and Mrs Shirley Nathan-Pulliam, a member of the Maryland House of Delegates.

Officials of Howard University also paid tributes.
