Energy Minister Phillip Paulwell says the government is looking to spend some $1.2 billion over the next two years to undertake several energy saving initiatives across several public sector entities.

As part of the project, Paulwell says more than 100,000 compact fluorescent lamps will be replaced with LED lamps and over 5,000 air conditioning units are to be changed.

Prime Minister Portia Simpson-Miller, in her contribution to the Budget debate, announced the implementation of the energy conservation pilot project aimed at cutting the public sector electricity bill by 30 per cent.

The cost of electricity used by government entities is estimated to reach $13.4 billion this year.

Mr Paulwell says the government expects to recover the 1.2 billion dollars spent on the project over the same two-year period because of the huge savings it is projected to achieve.
