The Jamaica Teachers' Association (JTA) has backed Education Minister Ronald Thwaites in his call that parents of students at secondary schools pay auxiliary fees.

In his presentation in the Sectoral Debate on Tuesday, Thwaites declared that the fees are not optional.

This signalled a reversal of the policy of the previous government which said the fees are optional and non-obligatory.

In expressing his support, JTA president Paul Adams said the association has long held that the allocation from the government is not sufficient to meet the needs of schools.

Adams said parents should take responsibility for the education of their children and pay what is due to the schools.

He is encouraging parents who are facing financial challenges not to shy away but workout a payment plan with schools.
