The National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA) has taken the National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA) to court for environmental breaches.
NEPA says the NSWMA has been operating the Riverton City Landfill in St. Andrew without an environmental permit.

It also says the NSWMA has failed to provide requested information relating to its waste disposal facility at Riverton.

NEPA’s Legal and enforcement Director, Robert Collie, says the NSWMA was granted a permit in 2005, but that it lapsed in 2010.

The matter is set to be heard in court on July 31.

Meanwhile, Executive Director of the NSWMA, Jennifer Edwards, has expressed surprise at the court action.

She says while NEPA is within its right to serve a summons, she was under the impression that the two parties were still in discussion on the matter.

But Edwards says the NSWMA will continue to speak with NEPA and to do what is necessary as it’s still hoping to get a permit.

She says she cannot say if NSWMA will contest NEPA’s decision since she has not been able to discuss the issue with the board and her legal officer.
