The Opposition Leader, Andrew Holness says he hopes that the shooting death of Kay-Ann Lamont in St. Thomas on Saturday will be a turning point for the Jamaica Constabulary Force.

A statement issued today by the Jamaica Labour Party said Holness visited Lamont’s family last night and pledged his support for them.

Holness described the 27-year-old pregnant woman’s death as tragic and inexcusable. He said no family should have to bear that grief.

He said he hopes the incident causes the police to re-examine how they interact with the public.

Holness also commended the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions and the Independent Commission of Investigation for the speed in which they dealt with the case.

However, he said he wants the same to be extended to other cases before the court.

The Opposition leader also wants the police force to place special focus on the constabulary's Chaplaincy Unit.

He said the unit should be more effective and able to identify at risk police personnel before they do harm to citizens and or themselves.

Lamont was shot twice in her head during an altercation with corporal Dwayne Smart, after he attempted to arrest her for using indecent language.

She was eight months pregnant.

Her sister, Novia, was injured and had to be hospitalised.

Yesterday, the DPP ruled that corporal Smart be charged with murder, wounding with intent, assault and illegal possession of firearm.
