Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller wants special attention to be paid to the traffic ticketing system to streamline it and improve its efficiency.

A statement from her office says Simpson Miller met with the National Road Safety Council committee this morning where she issued the instructions regarding the ticketing system to the ministers of national security and transport.

Up to last year, it was estimated that one million tickets were unpaid.

Based on these figures, it’s believed that the government is owed a more than $3 billion.

A computer-based integrated traffic-ticketing system is now in operation as part of a broader strategy to collect unpaid traffic fines.

Meanwhile, Simpson Miller said the statistics show a reduction in road fatalities up to August, when compared with the corresponding period last year.

But she pointed out there was a spike in fatalities among motorcyclists and she has mandated that this area be given special focus.
