Bar president says murder cases worrisome

Barbara Gayle, Justice Coordinator

President of the Jamaica Bar Association Ian Wilkinson has raised concern about the number of murder cases on the books in the courts.

Wilkinson was speaking at this morning’s opening of the Michaelmas session of the Home Circuit Court.

The session opened with 588 cases on the list, 340 of which are murder cases.

Wilkinson said the number of murder cases is unfathomable and shows that no one is immune to crime.

In the meantime, Chief Justice Zaila McCalla has urged stakeholders in the justice system to ensure that the backlog of court cases is reduced speedily.

She also called for programmes to be implemented to sensitize the public about matters to do with the justice system.
