The Jamaica Teachers Association (JTA) says teachers are operating with the bare essentials and there are no extras to be trimmed.

In a Sunday Gleaner article, management consultant Dr Franklin Johnston said his core function is to trim the waste and to determine those things which do not work well in the education ministry.

But the JTA’s acting president Dr Mark Nicely says there’s no fat to be cut from schools.

Dr Nicely says Jamaica has one of the highest student- teacher ratios and the budgetary allocation for education in Jamaica is also one of the lowest in the Caribbean.

Dr. Nicely says against this background, he believes the teaching/learning aspect of education is in need of extra expenditure.
