Warmington says he was not consulted on committee role
Daraine Luton, Senior Staff Reporter
Outspoken Member of Parliament (MP) Everald Warmington has ignored his appointment as chair of a parliamentary committee, saying he has not called a meeting because he was not consulted about his availability to head the economy and production committee.
Warmington said while he is listed as the chair of the committee, he is not the chairman and thus will not be calling any meetings.
Fitz Jackson, the MP for South St Catherine, brought the matter of a dormant economy and production committee to the attention of the House.
He said the committee is important to the functioning of the Parliament and noted that no report has come from it since the change of political administration in January.
Delroy Chuck, the Leader of Opposition Business in the House, said a new chairman of the committee is to be named shortly.
The economy and production Committee is charged with the responsibility of examining policy documents and statement from ministers and government agencies on the economy.
The committee also has the responsibility of examining legislative proposals on the economy and to make recommendations to the Cabinet, through the legislation committee.
Sessional committees of Parliament, such as the economy and production committee, are chaired by Opposition members.
