Lawyers representing police constable Rushon Hamilton are to continue mounting their defense as the murder trial continues today in the Home Circuit Court.

The Crown is alleging that Hamilton sexually assaulted 14 year old schoolgirl Jhaneel Goulbourne on October 4, 2008 then killed her after the incident was reported.

The Crown closed its case yesterday after calling 11 witnesses.

Former policeman Michael McDonald should have been the 12th prosecution witness however he has failed to appear in court despite an arrest warrant being issued.

The prosecution told the court that efforts were made to locate him but to no avail and as such it would close its case.

Yesterday, Hamilton gave an unsworn statement denying any wrongdoing saying he was very sad that the girl cannot be found.

He also said it was McDonald who had a relationship with the teen.

According to Hamilton, he could not hurt anyone.

The policeman also said he does not have a boat and does not know anyone with a boat who could have dumped the girl's body at sea, as claimed by the prosecution.

Hamilton cannot be cross examined because he did not swear to his statement.

And yesterday, the court also heard from Hamilton’s grandmother and a former teacher as character witnesses.

The defense is expected to call two more witnesses today.
