The Ministry of Health is reporting that there have been 285 new dengue cases in under a week.

Figures released by the ministry’s information department indicate that there are now 1,710 suspected cases of dengue fever in Jamaica.

Last Thursday, the Ministry disclosed that 1,215 persons had contracted the virus, and on Wednesday the Chief Medical Officer, Dr Michael Coombs reported that the figure had climbed to 1,425.

So far, there are six suspected dengue-related deaths.

Dengue is spread when a person is bitten by the Aedes Aeqypti mosquito which had earlier bitten someone with the virus.
