Amendments to Rent Restriction Act being finalised
Minister without Portfolio in the Housing Ministry, Dr. Morais Guy has indicated that amendments to the Rent Restriction Act should be finalised in the upcoming financial year.
Dr. Guy said a draft of the bill has been completed and is being reviewed by the Chief Parliamentary Counsel.
The amendments are aimed at providing stronger regulations and guidelines regarding the roles and obligations of tenants and landlords.
Some of the proposed changes include having a mechanism in place to deal with rental prices, equal protection for landlords and tenants and guidelines governing deposits.
The Act will also provide for a Rent Tribunal to adjudicate rent related cases instead of the Resident Magistrate's Courts.
