A confrontation between prisoners and police personnel at the Supreme Court building this afternoon has resulted in the injury of a policeman.
It’s reported that sometime after midday a prisoner in the holding cell was seen smoking a marijuana cigarette and sharing it with other cellmates.
It’s further reported that a policeman who saw what was happening tried to confiscate the drug.
According to reports the policeman was attacked by the prisoner and also hit in the face.
Other prisoners reportedly became boisterous and pepper-spray was used by police personnel to get them under control.
It’s not certain how many prisoners were inside the holding cell.
The policeman was taken to hospital where he received stitches and was given a tetanus injection.
Persons on the ground floor of the building were affected by the fumes and one policewoman, who became ill from inhaling the substance, had to be escorted from the premises.
The male prisoner was removed from the cell and was later charged with wounding.
