Operators of public passenger vehicles are commending the Transport Authority for deciding to introduce a new application process to meet the April 1 re-licensing period.
As of yesterday, public passenger operators will be required to have their vehicles inspected at Transport Authority sites, as a condition for renewing their road licenses.
Previously, operators were permitted to use private evaluators.
The agency says the change in procedure is aimed at reducing the time to process applications for the upcoming 2013-2014 licensing period.
President of the National Council of Taxi Associations (NCOTA) Deon Chance, says the move is a positive one.
Meanwhile, National Coordinator of the Jamaica Association of Transport Owners and Operators (JATOO), Egeton Newman says his organisation wants the Transport Authority to ensure the system works as planned.
In the meantime, the Authority says there will be no increase in the fees for road license applications for public passenger vehicles or commercial carriers.
It is also urging all operators to renew their road licenses early to avoid prosecution come April 1.
