The Police High Command and the Police Officers’ Association (POA) have condemned the killing of retired Deputy Superintendent of Police Denzil Boyd.
Boyd was shot fatally outside his house in Queensborough Gardens in St Andrew about 10:45 this morning. According to reports from the Constabulary Communication Network (CCN), the incident occurred shortly after he and his wife arrived home from church.
The CCN said the retired policeman was having a conversation with two men on the outside of his house when explosions were heard. Family members reportedly went to investigate and found him lying in the roadway with gunshot wounds. They called the police and he was taken to hospital where he died.
His licensed firearm was stolen. A motive for his murder has not yet been established.
In a release this afternoon Police Commissioner Owen Ellington described the killing of the retire lawman as “shameless, heartless and senseless” and he assured the family that all efforts will be made to bring his killers to justice.
He urged persons with information about the incident to come forward, noting that their silence would only help to protect the criminals.
Meanwhile, the president of the POA, Senior Superintendent Glenford Hudson says the organisation is deeply distressed and outraged by the news of Boyd’s murder.
He says the 63-year-old retired officer was a positive man who served his country superbly. He says Boyd was an inspiration to young investigators across several police divisions, helping to hone the skills of several detectives.
Both the Commissioner and the POA have expressed condolences to Boyd’s widow and family members.
