Road safety agency exec renews advocacy for new road law
The vice chairman of the National Road Safety Council (NRSC) says there is an urgent need for the new Road Traffic Act to be implemented this year.
Dr Lucien Jones says the new legislation will empower the Island Traffic Authority (ITA) to suspend the drivers’ licence of motorists who exceed the legal points limit without having to go to court.
He argues that this would make a huge difference in augmenting the efficiency of the new traffic ticketing system, which he adds, is already having an impact.
The NRSC vice chairman says with more drivers getting distracted by the use of cell phones, the new Road Safety Act will provide sanctions for persons caught using cell phones while driving.
In addition, he says the new legislation provides for an improved system of driver training and licensing and will seek to ensure that motorists comply with international standards for tyres used on vehicles.
