Kingston mayor heads new building committee

Mayor of Kingston Angella Brown-Burke is to assume the chairmanship of the Kingston and St. Andrew Corporation's (KSAC) Town Planning and Building Committee.

A new committee was re-constituted at yesterday’s sitting of the KSAC's monthly meeting, following a resolution that the former Committee be dissolved in order to preserve its integrity.

However, the resolution was passed without support from Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) councillors, who staged a walk out when a request to delay voting was denied.

The JLP councillors had requested that voting be delayed, saying they did not receive adequate notice that the former committee would have been dissolved.

Fourteen of the 21 members who made up the Town Planning and Building Committee tendered their resignation last month, after news broke that a housing project in St. Andrew which was ordered demolished by the Supreme Court was later given the committee's stamp of approval.

The project was said to have breached several aspects of the building code.
