Education Minister Ronald Thwaites says his ministry will not oppose study leave for teachers once the Jamaica Teachers’ Association (JTA) has indicated that the applicant can only pursue further education away from the classroom.
Speaking during the JTA’s annual conference this morning, Thwaites said his ministry will adhere to discretionary privileges which are enshrined in the Code of Regulations.
Against that background he also announced that more than 160 persons have been approved for full time study leave for the upcoming academic year.
The education minister is encouraging other teachers to remain in the classroom while they study.
The education minister has been facing criticism since May when he said that the Government could no longer afford $2.5 billion each year to sustain leave entitlements to teachers.
