MAJ on shift system

2009-11-03 13:00:50 | (0 Comments)

Representatives of the Medical Association of Jamaica (MAJ) are to meet with health officials on Friday to discuss the proposal to put doctors on a shift system.

MAJ President Dr Winston Delahaye says the association has been summoned to a meeting after it raised objections to the move.

Sources say the proposal is being considered in an effort to cut back on overtime salaries paid to doctors.

However Dr Delahaye believes the implementation of a shift system is likely to have a negative impact on the quality of service offered to patients.

He wants the government to discuss with the doctors the recommendations of the preliminary report on the recent examination of medical salaries.

If a shift system is enforced each regional health authority could reportedly save a minimum of $10 million monthly in overtime payment to doctors.
