Dismissed Central Bank Governor, Derick Latibeaudiere has indicated that he is hurt by the way the Government has handled the matter of his firing.
Having kept out of the public debate since his dismissal on Friday, the former Governor spoke with The Gleaner yesterday. Mr. Latibeaudiere would not elaborate of the matters concerning his departure, but made it clear that he was hurt. The central banker was fired on Friday because of concerns about the amount of money he was earning in rental and maintenance allowance. The former Governor was receiving $38 million a year. This includes $23 million in rent and maintenance for living in his own house. According to the Prime Minister, the Governor, resisted attempts by the Bank’s board and the Finance Minister Audley Shaw to renegotiate the package. The package was signed by the previous administration, but the rental and maintenance payments never spiked until 2007 when the Governor moved into his own house. Mr. Latibeaudiere said he is yet to make a decision about his future. He is wishing for an early conclusion of the talks with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), for a US$1.2 billion loan for Jamaica. Up to the point of his dismissal, Mr. Latibeaudiere was leading Jamaica’s negotiations with the IMF. That role has now been assumed by Financial Secretary Dr Wesley Hughes. Since the Governor’s dismissal ratings agency Standard & Poors (S&P), has downgraded Jamaica to Triple C. This is one notch above the default rating, which would mean that Jamaica is having problems paying its debt. S&P has cited the Governor’s departure among the reasons for the downgrade as well as the fact that the Government continues to borrow more money despite revenues dwindling. Mr. Latibeaudiere has declined to make any pronouncements on the rating because he has not been able to analyze the latest S&P downgrade. When S&P previously downgraded Jamaica to ‘Triple C Plus’ while he was in office, Mr. Latibeaudiere had said the action was premature adding that the agency did not sufficiently take into account the IMF negotiations.
