The Prime Minister Bruce Golding and the Opposition Leader Portia Simpson Miller will leave Jamaica today for the earthquake-ravaged Haiti.

Jamaica House said Prime Minister Golding is leading a delegation, which also includes emergency response personnel.

The delegation in conjunction with international partners is expected to assess the immediate assistance needs in Haiti.

Yesterday Prime Minister Golding met with the heads of the various rescue and emergency agencies.

Mr Golding is appealing to Jamaicans to help in whatever way they can.

Jamaica will serve as a co-ordinating centre for many international aid responses including donations from CARICOM.

Former Prime Ministers PJ Patterson and Edward Seaga have pledged their assistance to the Haitian recovery effort.

In a joint release, Mr Patterson and Mr Seaga said they have written to the Prime Minister offering their experience.

They also said they would be advising CARICOM of their willingness to help.

Meanwhile, the Assistant Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS) Ambassador Albert Ramdin said he will be traveling to Haiti soon.

He said he is encouraged that member states have already started to take concrete steps to support the people of Haiti.

Ambassador Ramdin, who chairs the OAS Group of Friends of Haiti, has been in discussions with OAS members about the coordination of rescue efforts.
