Prime Minister and Leader of the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) Andrew Holness has sought to assure media practitioners who have come under attack from JLP platforms in Manchester and Portland that his government supports democracy and freedom of speech.

Holness made the declaration while speaking a luncheon this afternoon put on by the Private Sector Organisation of Jamaica.

He said the government was not against the work of the media, it only wanted balance and fairness.

The prime minister’s assurance of respecting freedom of the press came hours after the Press Association of Jamaica sent a letter to him expressing concern over the verbal attack on journalists from JLP platforms in Manchester last Wednesday and in Portland on Monday night.
