The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) has started a probe into the fatal shooting of a man in St Catherine.

Dead is Richard Goodhall, a 22-year-old labourer of Cottage community near Kitson Town, St Catherine.

According to police reports, at about 5:30am Goodhall was among a group of armed men that tried to rob a policeman.

It is said that a tussle developed, during which the police disarmed the men then fired shots hitting the deceased.

The other men said to have ran and escaped in the area.

An illegal gun was seized by the police.

As news of Goodhall's death spread throughout the rural Top Mountain community a large number of residents converged.

There were contending views about the deceased, who has many relatives in the community.

"We received a call about six, so, we are here just carrying out our mandate," Isaiah Simms of INDECOM said.

A female relative told The Gleaner, that while the deceased was not without fault he was not known as a gunman.

"I know him feisty and out of order, but, I don't know as any gunman," a relative said.
