ST. GEORGES, Grenada, CMC – Commissioner of Prisons, Don MacKenzie Sunday confirmed that the body of former national sportsman, Joel Lendore, who was awaiting trial on a charge of murdering his wife, had been found hanging in his prison cell.

Law enforcement officials said that a coroner’s inquest will be held to determine the cause of death.

Lendore is accused of causing the death of his wife, Sheron Bethel Lendore and his case was among 12 to be heard during the current sitting of the High Court.

Mrs. Lendore was found with her throat slashed in 2009 at the couple’s home on the Grenadine island of Carriacou.

The murder sent shockwaves throughout the island of 6,000 where Lendore is revered as a sporting icon having represented Carriacou in cricket, football and track and field.

He was also employed by the Grenada government as the Sports Officer for Carriacou.
