Golding considering compensation fund for crime victims

Justice Minister, Mark Golding, says he is exploring the possibility of establishing a compensation fund to assist victims of crime and violence.

Speaking at the official opening of the May Pen Restorative Justice Centre in Clarendon this week, Senator Golding said currently, the criminal justice system does not provide adequate compensation for victims.

He said this could be addressed through the establishment of a fund, to help in cases where such intervention may be required.

While acknowledging the existing economic and fiscal constraints, Senator Golding argued that putting such a facility in place, would be pivotal to enhancing the criminal justice process.

Senator Golding explained that such a facility exists in other countries and it would see resources being identified and earmarked for a special pool of funds.
