Trelawny Parish Council gets ultimatum

The Trelawny Parish Council has been given 28 days to improve the physical conditions at three of its facilities or face court action.

The Public Health Department has served four summonses on the Parish Council, citing breaches of the public health law at the Falmouth Market, the Bus Park along Tharpe Street and the Falmouth Cemetery.

The health authority said the concerns include improper sanitary convenience and poor garbage disposal practices at the facilities.

According to deputy chief public health inspector, Delroy Mowatt, of all the council’s facilities, the Falmouth Market, the Cemetery and newly-created bus park pose the biggest health challenge.

Mowatt said the cemetery is densely overgrown and is being used as a municipal dump.

He said the lack of proper toilet facilities and running water at the Bus Park and the market is of grave concern.

Meanwhile, the Mayor of Falmouth, Collin Gager, said the Trelawny Parish Council is working to correct the problem at the Bus Park.

As a result, he said the Council is prepared to engage its lawyers to respond to the threat of court action.
