Manchester United go top of Premier League
2012-02-11 15:16:45 | (0 Comments)
Wayne Rooney sent champions Manchester United to the top of the Premier League today after a 2-1 win over visiting Liverpool at Old Trafford.
However, the match was overshadowed by Luis Suárez’s refusal to shake Patrice Evra’s hand before the kickoff.
The spotlight fell on the prematch events when Suárez, who had served an eight-game ban for racially abusing Evra in their last league encounter, snubbed the Frenchman and ignored his outstretched hand.
Rooney scored twice in three minutes at the start of the second half to turn the focus back to the title race as the defending champions jumped above Manchester City at the top of the standings.
Suárez, booed by United fans every time he touched the ball, scored in the 80th minute to give Liverpool hope, but United held on for the victory.
United have 58 points from 25 games, one more than City, who play at Aston Villa tomorrow.
In other games, Everton blanked Chelsea 2-nil, Blackburn beat QPR 3-2, Arsenal beat Sunderland 2-1, Norwich beat Swansea 3-2, Fulham edged Stoke 2-1 and Wigan beat Bolton 2-1.
