Education ministry: Workshops will go on

The Education Ministry says it is working to ensure workshops organised for teachers over the mid-term break go on as planned.

On Tuesday, the Jamaica Teachers’ Association (JTA) advised its members that they were not under any obligation to attend the workshops organised for tomorrow.

The JTA said in the advisory that it strongly believes teachers should not be required to attend training sessions on days that are designated mid-term breaks.

However, acting permanent secretary in the education ministry, Grace McLean, said the JTA’s advisory was sent out because of a misunderstanding.

She said the ministry has since been in discussions with the JTA and she expects the workshops will go on as planned.

McLean said the workshops have been organised to address areas of weakness identified by the ministry.

She said one such weakness is the development of numeracy skills.
