Union, Carib Cement resume talks

Anxious workers at the Caribbean Cement Company could hear today if they will receive a wage increase, as their union and the company’s management resume talks at the labour ministry.

The management is expected to return to the negotiation table today with a settlement package.

Those talks are now underway at the labour ministry.

The company’s management had agreed to review a settlement package for workers following a series of meetings over the past two weeks.

Employees at the company, who staged a sit-in last week, have threatened to take industrial action if the company does not make a favourable wage offer.

NWU Vice President Granville Valentine said the workers concerns have heightened after cement workers in Trinidad and Tobacco received a seven per cent wage increase recently:

He said it is critical that the ongoing wage negotiation is completed before the next round of discussions begins in another two months.
