G8 wants Greece to remain in eurozone

2012-05-20 10:13:58 | (0 Comments)

The leaders of the G8 group of the world's most powerful economies say they want debt-stricken Greece to remain in the eurozone.

In a communiqué released at the end of their summit in the United States yesterday, the G8 leaders have also given a commitment that they will seek to promote growth and fiscal responsibility.

Greece's possible exit from the eurozone was high on the agenda following the inconclusive elections in that country.

But the leaders of France, Germany, the US, the UK, Italy, Japan, Canada and Russia say they have agreed on the importance of a strong and cohesive eurozone for global stability and recovery.

While affirming their interest in having Greece remain in the eurozone, the G8 leaders were divided on whether to continue with austerity measures or back new stimulus initiatives instead.
