South Africa police chief fired

2012-06-12 17:59:22 | (0 Comments)

South African President Jacob Zuma has fired police chief General Bheki Cele, who has been accused of corruption.

Zuma said General Cele will be replaced by Mangwashi Phiyega, who will become the country's first female police chief.

General Cele, whose predecessor was also jailed for corruption, was suspended in October, after it emerged he had been implicated in alleged unlawful property deals.

Last year, a South African corruption investigator ruled that police buildings were leased from a company at inflated prices.

South Africa's government has been hit by a succession of scandals recently.
