Opposition Leader Andrew Holness has called for an urgent meeting with Prime Minister, Portia Simpson Miller to discuss the Jamaica 50 celebrations.

The planning for the celebrations has been mired in controversy with public spats between the current and former ministers of culture.

The latest round of controversy surrounds the use of the Orville ‘Shaggy’ Burrell produced ‘On a Mission’ in the secretariat’s marketing campaign.

Yesterday, Mr Holness wrote to Mrs Simpson Miller expressing fear that plans for the celebration of Jamaica’s 50th anniversary may not have the desired introspective, yet unifying and jubilant effect on Jamaicans at home and abroad.

He says the various activities as proposed should not be allowed to continue in the absence of national accord.

He says an urgent meeting is needed to bring some sense of national unity to this momentous occasion.
