Kingston cabbies end protest

2012-08-17 08:09:40 | (0 Comments)

Jerome Reynolds, Gleaner Writer

Corporate Area taxi operators are expected to return to regular duties today.

Scores of operators parked their cars and mounted demonstrations yesterday to protest against what they said was an unfair clampdown by the police.

The cabbies who are represented by the Jamaica Association of Transport Owners and Operators (JATOO) met with the Police High Command yesterday to discuss their grouses.

JATOO’s National Coordinator Egeton Newman says the talks were successful and some of the concerns have been addressed.

While not providing detail, Newman said some concessions have been made while the high command has promised to look at others.

In the meantime, the traffic police and the transport authority say they will continue their crackdown on taxi operators who are operating illegally.
