Advocacy group, Jamaicans for Justice (JFJ) wants all children in police lock-ups released by Sunday - one day before the start of the new school year.

In a statement, the group said these children must be placed in facilities where they can receive an education.

The group also wants systems to be put in place by Sunday for all children in state custody to receive an education.

JFJ’s chairperson, Susan Goffe says the denial of an education to these children is a breach of the Convention of the Rights of the Child, to which Jamaica is a signatory.

She believes an education will help rehabilitate these children.

Goffe is calling for the Ministry of National Security, the Ministry of Youth and Culture, the Children’s Advocate and the Child Development Agency, all agencies with responsibility for children in Jamaica to intervene.
