There were anxious moments in Half Way Tree, St Andrew a short while ago as emergency personnel scrambled to rescue two infants who were locked in a BMW motorcar in the Winchester Business Centre.

For about 20 minutes, passersby, fire personnel and the police tried to open the vehicle to free the children.

“Umbrella, pickaxe etc. called into play but glass resisted,” tweeted communications consultant Dr Marcia Forbes as the crowd swelled while frantic attempts were being made to help the child.

Eventually the emergency personnel were able to pry the driver’s door and lift the safety locks to remove the children from the vehicle in the mid afternoon sun.

It was not immediately clear where were the children’s parents or guardians.

More details to follow.
