Accused St Thomas killer cop on suicide watch

The head of operations for the St Thomas police, Deputy Superintendent Patrick Bennett, says the corporal accused of fatally shooting a 27-year-old pregnant woman in Yallahs, St Thomas is now on suicide watch.

Bennett said the officer has been in shock since the incident.

“He is very distraught and is undergoing counselling,” Bennett said.

“He is really traumatized and we have to have people around him all the time,” said the Deputy Superintendent, who operates from the Morant Bay Police Station.

The accused corporal, who is reportedly in his mid 30s lives in the Yallahs community with his wife and two children.

Today, there was a standoff between residents and the police in Yallahs as the community members demanded that the policeman be turned over to them.

Kay-Ann Lamont, was shot dead on Saturday during an altercation with a policeman after he attempted to arrest her for using indecent language.

Her sister, Novia, was injured and had to be hospitalised.

Since the shooting, the policeman has been in custody.

The police say his family has also been under protection as their lives have been threatened.
