Alleged online hacker denied bail

Twenty-seven-year-old Ronald Oates, the man believed to be the mastermind behind a computer hacking ring has been denied bail.

Oates is accused of extorting money from hundreds of persons who wanted to avoid having explicit photos of them posted to the internet.

He is to return to court on September 18.

The Organised Crime Investigation Division (OCID), Oates, who had been under surveillance for months, was arrested at his home last Monday.

He was charged under the Cyber Crimes Act and the Larceny Act.
