Education Minister Ronald Thwaites says the National Parenting Policy will be debated when parliamentary sittings resume on Tuesday.

He said in addition to outlining a set of standards to guide parents, the policy is also geared towards ensuring fathers face up to their parental responsibilities.

Thwaites said as soon as the parenting policy is passed, his ministry will move to set up the parenting commission.

In June, opposition leader Andrew Holness, who is also the former education minister, said there is an urgent need for the policy to be implemented.

He noted that the proposed parenting policy represents the best attempt at ensuring fathers face up to their responsibilities.
