The Education ministry says it is in the process of appointing a new board at the Garvey Maceo High School in Clarendon.

The Opposition spokesperson on education, Marisa Dalrymple-Philibert, said she is concerned about the resignation of the Garvey Maceo High school board chairman and its link to the appointment of a principal for the school.

Dalrymple-Philibert said this issue must be addressed speedily, given the dismal performance of the students in this year’s Secondary Education Certificate examinations.

She said it is even more important for Garvey Maceo High school because the students at the institution have been performing poorly over the years.

Dalrymple-Philibert wants the established standards for selecting principals to be upheld.

She is suggesting that the Teachers Service Commission investigate the issue.

In response, the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Education, Grace McLean said she cannot disclose the reasons for the resignation.

However, she is seeking to assure that the school is not without leadership as an acting principal is in place.

She said a principal is yet to be appointed because no recommendation has been made to the ministry.
