Jamaica blanked Paraguay 2-0 today to secure their first victory in the women’s competition at the Pan American Junior Hockey Championships in Mexico.
Trudy Ann Knight and captain Demi Nicholson scored the goals for Jamaica. With the victory, Jamaica moved to fourth place in Pool B with three points from three games. Caribbean rivals Trinidad and Tobago and Venezuela are also locked on three points. Chile are leading the Pool with perfect nine points from three games. However, the USA are on course to joint Chile atop the table as the Americans hold an 8-1 lead over T&T in second half action. Jamaica will next face Venezuela. The teams face off tomorrow at 9 a.m. The championships will qualify three countries to the International Hockey Federation’s 7th Women’s Junior World Cup. Meanwhile, Jamaica men’s team will be in action tomorrow against Brazil. The Aubyn Ferguson-coached men’s team has lost its first two matches. They were thrashed 8-0 by defending champions Argentina and 8-1 by T&T. Argentina and Trinidad and Tobago are both tied atop the men’s standings with six points each.
