The party’s 74th annual conference which began on Friday ends today with the public session at the National Arena in Kingston.
Smith’s councillors and delegates from Central St James were left puzzled by his absence from the private session of the conference held at Jamaica College in St Andrew.
It is understood that St James councillors as well as the party hierarchy tried repeatedly, to reach Smith by telephone but were not successful.
Concern was first raised after the delegates were left stranded in Montego Bay on Saturday morning.
Usually, MPs are responsible for arranging the transportation of their delegates from their constituencies.
But yesterday, they had to be assisted at the last minute by interim PNP chairman for North West St. James, attorney, Clayton Morgan and Mayor of Montego Bay, Councillor Glendon Harris.
The Gleaner made several unsuccessful attempts to reach Smith.
