The main opposition New National Party (NNP) has accused embattled Prime Minister Tillman Thomas of abusing the country’s constitution to protect his political future.
The charge follows Thomas’ decision on Monday to ask Governor General Sir Carlyle Glean to prorogue the parliament six months early.
The move is widely seen as a strategy to block the debate on a motion of no confidence against Thomas’ administration.

“We believe such an act is not in good faith and that the prime minister has used the constitution to protect his own political life,” said NNP deputy political leader Elvin Nimrod.
“This brings a lot of concern to us because at a time when the country is experiencing its worst financial and economic plight since independence...I believe this is the worst time that any prime minister should find to prorogue a parliament,” he added.
