Support laws for Sexual Offences Act to be before Cabinet soon

2012-09-30 11:18:13 | (0 Comments)

Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller says the regulations being drafted to accompany the Sexual Offences Act should be submitted to Cabinet soon.

The disclosure by Mrs Simpson Miller follows several peaceful protests across the island in support of victims of rape and other sexual offences.

The protests were sparked by the rape of three young girls and two women in Irwin, St James last week.

Speaking on her return from the United Nations General Assembly, the prime minister said the regulations will include provision for the creation of a sex offenders’ registry.

Mrs Simpson Miller says her administration is determined to provide the required laws and resources to fight crime and is moving swiftly to implement measures such as the sex offenders’ registry, which is already provided for in law.
